Calculating hand odds and winning ratios sets the winners apart from the losers and is essential if you want to be a successful poker player.

Why Use Poker Calculators

Understanding the odds is a key part of gambling.  If you want to play poker then you do need to make sure you can accurately estimate the chances of winning or losing various poker hands.  This will help you to adjust your play to meet different situations and limit the amount of money you lose.

One of the most useful poker tool options available to players is the poker calculator.  This is a basic algorithm which uses mainly statistical calculations to work out the odds of winning, losing or tying for the final hand.  You may have also heard of card counting and probability calculations being used in other card games such as blackjack.  These techniques are rarely used in poker because the game is far more complex and has too many different variables.  Nearly all advanced poker calculator tools are based on statistical machines alone.

The First Poker Calculator

The first odds calculator was developed by professional poker legend Mike Caro. He designed the Poker Probe back in 1990 that allowed simulations to be run to show the winning ratios in different poker situations.  The Poker Probe tool could be used to calculate Texas hold em odds and Omaha odds and was a valuable tool for poker players of all levels.

Types Poker Calculators

You can now download poker calculator tools easily from the Internet.  These provide you with a quick way to calculate odds.  There are basically three main types of poker calculators available:

1. Poker Advantage Calculators – these will calculate your winning ratio based on a specific game scenario such as the number of players, poker game type and hand available for the player.

2. Poker Odds Calculators – this is also known as the Monte Carlo Simulator and works out your winning ratio.  This is based on the number of games won divided by the number of games simulated in total for each player.

3. Poker Relative Calculators – this calculates the winning ratio in relation to another player’s chances.  These calculators are used for display purposes in tournaments and on poker TV shows as they can reveal an accurate estimate of each players winning chances.  You do need to know the other players hands in order to use relative calculators so they are not useful for ‘in-game’ players.

Calculators and Strategy Software

Many people find odds calculators useful for building up their experience and skill levels.  This can help you to work out important factors such as Texas holdem odds and holdem statistics as you practice.  Alongside online poker odds calculator tools you can also get other tournament strategy software.  Playing in tournaments is very different to regular table games.  Tournament strategy software can help you to adapt your game play and give you an advantage over your competitors.
