Poker in Germany

Poker  a few years ago in Germany was almost an unknown game.  At best, it has been associated with smoky saloons of the Wild West movies. Poker literally vanished from German casinos and the game had lost its popularity.

Beginning of 2005, however, the German DSF TV channel began broadcasting poker tournaments and laid the foundation to the ever increasing Poker Boom. In addition to this Poker is also being broadcast by one of the most popular TV channels Pro-7, where PokerStars are hosting weekly tournaments.  Pro-7 made the breakthrough in increasing awareness and popularity actively engaging the audience to try out Poker. German Poker has since then increased in followers at an exponential rate.
In Germany, the Poker boom is well under way and the dusty tables are now filled with active players. Poker tournaments hosted by casinos are all sold out and Poker seems to be climbing in becoming Germany’s number one card game.

Unfortunately, playing Poker for real money online is illegal and it is reserved for state casinos only.

For example the Casino in Wiesbaden has the authority to operate an online casino. But participation is exclusively reserved for the residents of Hessen.
